How We Wore It | Back to Basics

School is out. Summer is here. Things are good in this corner of the world, and I am grateful. All the crazy and horrifying things that are going on in the world have had me thinking a lot. “World Peace,” the beauty pageant answer for what is wanted most, seems impossible. What is it that we can do from here? What can I do? For me, donating financially to every worthy cause isn’t feasible. Flying to every crisis to aid isn’t possible. I’m not thoroughly educated on every political side because frankly, I find it exhausting and I don’t know where to begin or who to trust. I had a conversation with my older brother about feeling helpless in this regard. I asked him what we can do. He said that we can use our voice. I’ve thought about that a lot too. As one who doesn’t like confrontation, emerging from my self-bubble to speak out is scary and intimidating. What if someone doesn’t like what I said? What if my information is incorrect? What if I lose a friend? I don’t know enough about this to have a valid opinion. So. Where can I start? What can I do? I can start where I can. I can start with what I know. I can start with the basics. I can be kind, to everyone. I can teach my children to be kind. I can teach my children to be respectful. I can teach my children to be good. I can look for ways to help in my community. To me, this seems small. It doesn’t seem to reach as far as I’d like it to. But it’s a start. Be kind.

On Sundays, I teach songs to kids aged 3-11. I couldn’t get this song out of my mind. I knew that I needed to teach it to these kids. It brings me comfort and peace, maybe it will for you too.

We’re taking it back to the basics this month for our How We Wore It series. I like it. Easy. Classic. Basic.  It seems impossible these days to find plain white t-shirts for kids. I checked all the usual places and found nothing. Thank you, Walmart, for having $4, plain white t’s! I found my shirt by fluke at Winners. I love it. Getting my girls to wear jeans is nothing short of a miracle. The only ones they will wear (which is very rare) are the ballerina jeggings from Old Navy. I love the color and style of my jeans, which are I found on the sale rack at the Gap. And ya know, nothing’s quite as basic as a good pair of Converse sneakers. You’ll have to excuse Eden from these photos. We had back to back shoots and she opted to play with her squirt gun instead. Fair enough! Fay was up for spending some extra time with mom, so it’s just her and I in this post. Make sure to check out my blogging besties on their blogs which are linked below.
